How the mighty has fallen

Gaydar used to be THE gay dating site full of active members of all ages. There used to be loads of genuine messages and lots of chat in the chatrooms. It was a great online community with many users of my local room meeting up in real life for group night outs. Messages to meet were regular.

Now, many of those people that used to use it are nowhere to be seen, their profiles are still active but haven't been online in a long time. One profile of a friend who used to be on daily shows he was last online 6 May 2010, it is now Jan 2017

Gaydar started to lose it when they introduced a mobile version of their site (the desktop version wouldn't work properly on mobiles and tablets) and decided to charge members two subscriptions if they wanted access via desktop AND mobile.

Since then, people who were regular users, have moved elsewhere, My local chatroom which used to have a sprinkling of all age groups is now rarely visited by anyone in their 30's or 40's and virtually never anyone in their 20's.

The number of inactive and fake profiles is unreasonable. The number of messages... (Read the full review)

In summary, I would not recommend Gaydar to a friend.

Gaydar is a haven for cyberbullies and internet trolls

Although in theory Gaydar claim to not tolerate inappropriate conduct in its chat rooms, my experience has been that its support team is simply unable to deal with the cyberbullies and trolls who all to often attack people verbally without provocation.

As a a former regular user, I have watched a number of individuals verbally abuse individuals and even make threatening remarks. I myself have always sought to uphold the spirit of the website which I think is to bring gay people to gather to chat and cruise. Unfortunately, I believe despite the fact that some users are decent people, the small minority of cyberbullies put many people off due to their getting away with abuse over and over again.

I simply believe the support team is so overwhelmed by these bullies (who in turn claim to be the victims themselves) that its website is out of control. As an educator, I teach e-safety on a daily basis and feel strongly that a website such as gayer has a social and moral responsibility to actively prevent bullies from flourishing in such environments. On the contrary, Gaydar seems more concerned about protecting its paying members at a cost. I believe in the... (Read the full review)

Overburdened with abandoned profiles

Gaydar USED to be a giant amongst gay dating/contact sites. That buzz has long been lost. It's now a dinosaur. The main gripes against it are firstly how it boosts its apparent membership base by keeping profiles live for all eternity. Searching will turn up 40-50% profiles that have not been visited in the last 6months, many dating back years (expect to find profile dead since 2001). Secondly when using the app. you fail to receive notification of tracks left for you, yet there is no mention of this anywhere.
Finally the ubiquitous pestilence of blank profiles - just too too many. Too easy to set up a blank profile for the curious and nosy.
The only time I've found Gaydar of much use is in contacting guys in rural areas where little else is available for small town connections.
Overall this site has had its day..... unless someone decides to slim it down and get back to basics.

Try it, see for yourself but keep your wallet shut.

In summary, I would recommend Gaydar to a friend.
