Our Review:

FitLads.net is a gay dating site devoted to helping young gay guys meet others like them. The emphasis is on more superficial encounters, so it's probably not the best site to choose if you're looking for someone to settle down with.

At the time of this review there were 4007 members online and just a measly 24 in the chat rooms, not a fantastic number for a gay dating site. As mentioned above, the guys tend to be in their twenties and rough and ready working blue collar types. The majority are from the UK and mainland Europe. It's free to sign up and all you need is a valid email address. However, you can't start communicating or post to forums until your account has been manually approved. This can take several hours or more, so don't necessarily expect to be getting down to business straight away.  The profiles are generally fairly detailed and complete, with plenty of photos to browse. You can upload photos to your main profile, create your own gallery and private album that has to be unlocked for others to see it. In addition to creating a profile, you can customize the look in a number of ways, by changing the format, color and text. You can also add your own notes to profiles and manage your lists of photos, check out who's viewed your profile, create links to your network of friends, see your profile ratings from other members, and more.

Search-wise, you're a little limited to preconfigured search tabs, including online now, my mates, my bookmarked guys and online near me. There's a basic search that allows you to search by location, plus a username search as well. You can filter results by age range and members with photos/videos. To connect with others you can email members and visit the live chat rooms, although, as mentioned, these can be a little quiet at times. If you're a Premier member and own a webcam, you can use it in the live chat rooms. Whether anybody is there to watch you is another matter, but when I checked them out, there was a gentle discussion about Harry Potter going on. You can also connect with others by rating their photos, adding them as a favorite or sending a friend request, which they have to confirm. In terms of other features, you'll find 63 forums on a range of topics (FitLads info, general issues, sport, local stuff, news, sex and dating and some non-English language forums).

Free members get to register, create a profile, search, browse forums and enter the chat rooms. You can't initiate email, nor view photos (with the exception of main profile thumbnail pictures). Premier members get to see all photos (except private, unless unlocked), free communication, create a favorites list, bookmark guys, rate other profile pictures and check out who's been viewing you and adding you as a favorite. You can also use your webcam in the live chat rooms, view larger size photos, and you get access via a faster server. Whilst it's a lot cheaper than some of the competition, the chances of meeting and hooking up are somewhat limited outside the UK and mainland Europe, so think about it before committing yourself to what is essentially a very reasonable outlay, especially if you join for a year. Finally, there's a good FAQs section with plenty of detail as well as reliable email and telephone support. .

FitLads.net isn't a bad little site, but ultimately doesn't compare with the big boys. Unless you're satisfied with just online contact, chances are you might be scraping around a little here, which may be why it's so cheap to join.
