Our Review:

BigMuscleBears.com is a niche gay dating site geared towards those who want to hook up with large, hairy guys online and face to face. It's a rather plain looking site without much pizzazz, but this all makes for an uncluttered feel that helps make for easy navigation.

You need to be 21 years old to register. Signing up is free and all you require is a valid email address. At first glance it doesn't appear to be a very busy site. With 14,561 members at the time of this review, just 220 online doesn't do much to challenge this image. Members are mostly from the US and in appearance sometimes resemble Dog the Bounty Hunter. The resemblance doesn't end there, for as Dog has his loyal following, so do these guys. It's possible to join as a member (in which case you have to qualify as a big muscle bear) or an admirer, whereby you don't create a profile, but can access other member profiles on the site. Obviously it would be somewhat confusing to allow skinny, nerdy types to post a profile, so they just get sand kicked in their face and have to watch from the wings. It's therefore the job of admirers to do the running. Whilst there seems to be a bias towards the hookup end of the relationship spectrum, you're as likely to see a photo of a big beardy man swimming with a dolphin as riding a Harley wearing nothing but a leather jockstrap and a smile. My limited viewing of member videos comprised a country banjo duet and a man brushing his pubic hair with a comb. The point is that it's tamer here than on a lot of other sites, but you still get nudity at times.

There are plenty of inactive profiles on the site; helpfully, profiles automatically become inactive if you don't login for 6 months, maybe due to being on an extended bear-wrestling adventure up in the mountains. You can search profiles using the simple (keyword) search or an advanced search which allows you to preselect a range of criteria, with an emphasis on physicality and hairiness. Slightly annoyingly, to select criteria you have to use a system of drop-down menus, which can be cumbersome. You can also specify age, location, whether they have IM, whether they have video on their profile and their last login, which is good to know. Connecting with other members comprises email (personal email rather than an internal email system), IM and live video chat. The chat rooms weren't especially busy at the time of this review, but they can get lively in the evenings and at the weekends. You can also check out the bulletin board for member updates and create a favorites list by clicking the 'I like' button when browsing a profile. 

Free members get a fair deal, with free browsing and email privileges, in addition to creating a profile, searching and using other features on the site, such as Robbie's advice column and the health and lifestyle info pages. Supporters get featured ahead of standard members in listings and appear at the head of listings when they update their profile, amongst other profile enhancements. If you like the site then it's well worth pledging a donation (of your choice) to become a supporter and to ensure that the site keeps going. Finally, whilst the FAQs section isn't much help, all emails are replied to, eventually.

BigMuscleBears.com is a useful site for those who just want to meet big hairy gay guys, so it serves a valuable purpose in the world of niche gay dating sites. Without being too flashy, you get some useful features and it's great value. Just a shame that it's not a little busier.
