Our Review:
GayCupid.com looks great and features a mandatory naked male torso in reflective pose. It's a site helping gay singles to meet other gay singles and is geared more towards relationships rather than hookups. It's therefore a lot tamer and less raw than other sites you might visit in this category.
It's free to sign up and all you'll need is a valid email address and a couple of minutes to complete the registration form. There are literally millions of profiles to browse according to the site blurb, from across the world. At the time of this review there were only 5, yes 5, online. You'll find plenty of members from Asia, especially the Philippines. So, if you want to meet guys online from exotic climes then 'yay'. If you want something more conventional a little closer to home, and the potential to meet in person, 'boo'. A lot of the profiles have scant detail, which should warn you that many profiles will be fake or unused. That said, the profile layout is pretty good, with extensive member details and it's easy to connect with others or add them to your favorites list.
A number of search options are available. The advanced search (upgraded members only) lets you preselect age, weight, religion, nationality, country, smoking, drinking and more. You can also filter results to yield only those looking for a specific relationship type (e.g. pen-pal, friendship, romance/dating and marriage). You can also sort by newest members, members with photos, members grade, distance and last active, making it possible to screen out obsolete profiles. There's also a basic search, which doesn't seem all that basic in comparison to basic search tools on other sites. Add to this a username search, tag search (where profile content gets tagged by members) and member number search, it's fairly comprehensive.
You can connect by the usual email and IM (depends on membership level, see below). In addition, you can 'send interest' (let a member know you're interested). There are also video profiles to watch (Platinum only) and chat rooms. As mentioned above, all you'll get in the chat rooms is the noise of a howling wind, and the odd ball of tumbleweed. You can also connect by creating a favorites list and check out members by seeing who's viewed you.
It's free to create your profile, send an interest, add 5 photos to your profile, read messages from paying members and reply and use the basic search. Gold members get unrestricted contact with free and paying members, add a personality profile to their account (detailing their character, hobbies and interests, etc.) get their profile ranked higher than free members in searches and more. Platinum members get all of the above plus access to video profiles, send videos by email, translate messages into other languages (what happens if you date?) and are featured above Gold members in searches. In terms of value, the longer the membership the more you save (33% if you join for 3 months, 50% for 6 months and a massive 67% for 12 months). However, unless you're happy to chat with guys online and not worry about meeting them in person, go elsewhere. Finally, the technical support on the site is good, with an especially well-arranged FAQs section and decent email support.
Whilst claiming to be one of the largest gay dating sites, GayCupid.com is a bit of a let-down. It fails to deliver on its promise of a massive membership base and despite some great features, it's unlikely that you'll get much more than online fun and frolics here.
