Our Review:

MenNation.com is a gay dating website for gay guys (and girls) who are looking for friendship, dating, hookups, online fun or a romantic relationship. The site looks a little cluttered as there are lots of features crammed onto the homepage. You also get the mandatory naked male torso adorning the site, which is something of a badge of quality.

It's free to join MenNation.com and it takes just a minute or two to sign up. At the time of this review there were 42,146,515 members in total, 72,859 online, which is a massive membership base in comparison with most of the other sites in this category. As such, it means that your chances of finding a date are high, whether looking to meet online or in person. The site buzzes with activity; 178,471 new photos were recently added, 1234 were in the chat rooms, 10,127 were using IM and there were 161,479 groups with 2,988,430 members. If you have a free membership you'll have to put up with ads on the site. Furthermore, you only get the limited preview profile, which displays a thumbnail photo of that member, their name, location and not much else. The full profiles are a lot more detailed. As well as having plenty of info about the member's physical characteristics, interests and what they're looking for in terms of dating, you also find voice intro messages, videos and up to 20 photos, as well as blog posts and details of the member's friends networks and group memberships. It's also possible to opt for photo verification to authenticate the picture on the profile as being an accurate representation of that member (details on the site), which helps get more interest in a profile.

To narrow your browsing, a number of search options are available. The standard search is fairly limited and lets you search by location with limited profile demographics such as age range and what the other person is looking for (e.g. dating, online fun, relationship, hookup). Gold and Silver members can also use the username search, but only Gold members get to use the super search, which allows them to scan the profile database by any of the criteria listed in the profile. You can also specify distance, which yields all members within a certain radius of your location. All members can use the preconfigured one-click searches, including 'my online matches', 'new member photos' and 'hottest member videos'.

To connect with other members the most common method is the on-site email feature, which allows you to exchange messages with other members. It's also possible to 'flirt' with other members by sending introductory messages expressing an interest in a particular member. You might also use the Cupid Service, where you are automatically matched with compatible members, which is a good way of finding potentially suitable members very quickly. If you want to chat now, the MenNation.com chat rooms allow you to enter group chat rooms or go private one-to-one, with webcam if you have one. There's also IM, and it's easy to send an IM request by clicking on a member's profile. In addition, you can also connect by creating a hotlist or favorites list, adding a member as a friend (they need to confirm this), posting a blog or joining one (or more) of the many groups. This has the added bonus of putting you in touch with guys with the same interests as you.

Free members get to register and create a profile for free, but are restricted to viewing preview profiles. You get limited communication by email (contact only upgraded members who allow this, store emails for 30 days), chat rooms and IM access, an interactive magazine, up to 16 Cupid Matches per day, upload a video greeting and create a hotlist (up to 200 profiles) as well as email response within 48 hours. Silver members get the above, plus access to full profiles (with photos) and videos, store emails for 60 days, faster server speeds, telephone technical support, username search, up to 20 Cupid Matches per day, up to 500 profiles on their hotlist, 24 hour response to emails and a telephone support line. Gold members get this, plus unlimited profile viewing and communication, feature at the top of searches, 30 or more Cupid Matches per day, email storage for 120 days, and 12 hour response to emails sent to the support desk.

In terms of value, it's not really feasible to get by on a free membership as you're really limited in terms of who you can contact. Whether you choose to upgrade to Silver or Gold, you can save substantially by taking out a longer membership; whilst joining for a month is advisable to allow you to see if you like the site, it's quite expensive, so if you do remain a member after a month, switch to a longer membership term. Obviously, even a Silver membership can be frustrating as you still don't have full access to all the features, so opting for Gold is recommended.

MenNation.com is simply one of the best sites in this category. With a massive membership base and lots of activity, plus some great features, including chat rooms and IM allowing you to contact members in real time, it's a great choice for gay guys who want to meet others for friendship, dating, online fun or a more serious relationship.
