Our Review:

GBoy.com is a little confusing when you first see it. With a plain (and rather sombre) dark blue no-frills design, it doesn't exactly inspire you. The layout of the site is also a little unclear sometimes, so don't expect to be able to navigate the various features without some practice. Sadly, the general user-unfriendliness detracts from some of the other features that deserve mention and it's a dodo of a dating site.

You'll find thousands of member profiles to browse on the site. At the time of this review there were 1184 guys online, which isn't all that many compared to other gay dating sites. Most members were European (especially French) and there was a distinct lack of North American members, meaning that it's probably not going to be easy to meet up with guys near you in person. However, if you're planning a European road trip then you're laughing. The alternative is to use the site for online chat, however, there were only just over 200 members in the chat rooms. The language barrier may also be something of a problem for English speakers.

The official site blurb states that 85% of members have one photo or more on their profile, implying that there is an active and committed membership base. Notwithstanding the issues already mentioned, a great many profiles were complete and detailed. You'll find the usual basic information about a member, plus other important details including their last login date. When you register (free) you just need to provide a valid email address. You'll find a number of useful features on profiles, including profile notes, favorites lists, friends lists and a personal page that displays your tracklists, contacts, etc.

The search tools aren't really anything to write home about. Quick search allows you to search profiles by age range, distance (radius from your location between 10km-200km) and filter results based on criteria such as last login date. You can also order the returned results by last login date (most recent first), distance (closest first) and age. If you upgrade you also get access to the advanced search tool, which resembles the basic search but with more selection criteria (mostly physical characteristics). You can also search for profiles by tags (tag search), which is a good way of finding something very specific, e.g. members who have a particular interest.

You can connect with other members principally by email or in the chat rooms (if you upgrade). As mentioned above, the chat rooms aren't exactly frantic with activity. Alternatively, to find members with similar interests you could join one of the 1372 groups on the site, but be aware that plenty of these have a very small membership or have been abandoned. You can also flirt by sending 'virtual gifts' to break the ice. If you join as a free member you are fairly restricted in contacting other members (you can't send initiate emails or join video chat and you have only limited flirts). The technical support isn't especially good either. The FAQs section is available in French only, however, the email support form can be found in English.

GBoy.com is a disappointment in most respects and therefore one for you to avoid. If the complexity of the site doesn't put you off, the lack of action on the site probably will.
