Our Review:
Gay.com is a bright and breezy dating site for gay guys and girls. It caters for those seeking friendship, romance and hook ups and offers all of this through a fairly well designed website layout. So, what's to recommend Gay.com over other sites?
Gay.com operates a perfectly serviceable website without anything being outstanding. At the time of this review there were 11,174 members online and 250 in the live chat rooms. So, whilst not having a huge membership base there was some life. Being located in the New York City area, there were 3476 online in the same area, not bad for a large metropolitan area, but not great either. Member profiles aren't nearly as detailed as on some other sites and a bit more info would be desirable at times. Annoyingly, a lot of the profile page space is devoted to ads, although if you subscribe and upgrade you get an ad-free site. Being a free site, you'd expect plenty of fake or abandoned profiles; thankfully, each profile details the last activity on that profile, so you can get an idea of whether a profile is still in use.
It's possible to search for males, females and transgender members using the basic search tool. In addition, you can specify what you're looking for by build, weight, age, location, distance from zip code, eye color, hair, relationship status and much more. You can also preselect on the basis of HIV status, but there's no way of verifying this. If you subscribe you get additional sexual preference criteria to choose from (including body hair, role, endowment and frequency). It's possible to save searches too. There's also a member name search and a quick search (search by gender, age range and zip code) should you want to be less specific.
There aren't quite as many ways of connecting as on some other sites; you can exchange email, request IM from a contact and chat in real time and create lists of favorites and friends networks (you click on their profile to request a friend link and they have to confirm this). There isn't too much else and it's all fairly basic. There are also live chat rooms (with webcam if you have one) which can be fun when they're busy. You can keep it clean or get a little filthy, depending on the room. You can also go one-to-one.
Free members get to see profiles, thumbnail public profile photos, enter chat rooms, email (limited to 5 per day) save messages for 14 days and add members to their hotlist and favorites list. This is a pretty good deal for free membership. Premium members get unrestricted profile access, see photos in full size, access to private photos, unrestricted email privileges, enhanced account features (e.g. extra email storage) visit multiple chat rooms simultaneously (up to 15), get ad-free access and priority member support. So, whether you join for free or upgrade you get a pretty good deal. Site support is a lot better than on some other gay dating websites, especially as you can get online video chat help in addition to the usual FAQs and email form.
Gay.com isn't the busiest site, but what it lacks in numbers it makes up for in its solid, if basic features. Whether you join for free or subscribe, you'll get a good deal here.
