Our Review:

If you ask people to name gay dating sites, invariably Gaydar.com will be mentioned. So, given its high profile, why doesn't it make it into our Top 10? Read on to find out.

It's free to join Gaydar.com. All you need is a valid email address and a couple of minutes to complete the registration process. It's a good idea to take the site tour to see what's on offer. The site itself looks pretty good and is packed with features, sometimes feeling a little cluttered. It's estimated that there are something like 5 million profiles on the site. At the time of this review there were 34839 members online, which is extremely high for a site outside our Top 10, though not quite reaching their numbers. You can get versions of the site in French, German, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, Italian and Japanese, and there's a truly global community feel.

In terms of profiles, the registration blurb states that you're 25-times more likely to get messages if you post a photo. It's therefore a good idea to do this. You can also create photo albums and the amount of storage space you get to do this is very generous. Photos are coded with dots; red indicates adult content, yellow means nudity, blue means no adult content. The tone of profiles and photos is a lot tamer than on those sites that are aimed simply towards guys hooking up (e.g. Men4sexnow.com), but you'll still find plenty to get you hot under the collar. The membership base is fairly heterogeneous, no doubt due to the number of members. The chances of meeting guys online or in person are very good, whether you want a fling or a relationship, as long as you put in the spade work and get connecting.

There are a number of search options available, including the odd unique feature. In addition to the quick search (age range, what they're looking for), username and keyword searches, upgraded members get a very specific and detailed advanced search option, an even more specific power search (featuring all the criteria listed on a profile) and a distance search (very handy if you want to meet guys in person). You also get a number of preconfigured one-click searches, including new members, featured members and top rated members. Moreover, you can find guys to hook up with on your travels (using the Travel Itinerary function) and guys close to your current location (using the Gaydar Positioning Service-GPS). Meanwhile, the Cupid search enables you to specify what you're looking for and the resulting profiles are sent to your inbox. In short, there's a great selection of search tools to choose from.

Connecting with other members holds relatively few surprises. The default method is email, though you can also chat in real time by requesting IM with another member (by clicking on their profile) or visiting the chat rooms (which are often very busy). Additional ways of connecting involve adding profiles to your favorites list, adding as a friend (they have to confirm this), adding comments to profiles and using the Travel Itinerary function to contact members in far-flung, exotic places. Free members are limited in their communication; apart from creating a profile, as a free member you have very limited email privileges and cannot initiate contact, limited profile viewing (restricted to brief profiles) and creating a favorites list. To access all the other features and to get unlimited messaging you need to upgrade. It's not that expensive, but not such good value as most of the sites in our Top 10, especially if signing up for 12 months on a recurring subscription. Moreover, if you're going to join any site outside our Top 10, this one is strongly recommended. The technical support is also very good, with a 7-day a week telephone helpline (8am-9pm GMT), email response within 24 hours (sooner if you upgrade) and a very extensive FAQs section.

Whilst Gaydar.com still packs a punch, it's rested on its laurels a little too long and has been overtaken by some of the newer gay dating sites. However, it's still a really great site and chock-full of goodies with lots to keep you interested.
