Our Review:

GayDating.com looks a little sinister, as it's a little dark with a shadowy naked male torso featured on the intro page. Sadly, it's not really possible to find out much about the site before signing up. As you may not want to commit, this review tells you upfront without the need to register.

It's free to sign up to GayDating.com, you just need a valid email address to get you started and a couple of minutes to answer some questions about yourself. Whilst there are thousands of profiles registered, it's one of the quieter sites. At the time of this review there were 3,430 new members signed up that week, 91 of whom were located near me in the New York metropolitan area. Of these, 68 had IM, meaning that there should be plenty of people to chat with in real time, and perhaps even meet in person, though not as many as on some other sites. The chat rooms were very quiet, with just 3 rooms active and 19 users.

You navigate the site using the 8 blue tabs on the homepage, which makes things nice and simple. You can switch between profile views, selecting either a preview profile with basic info on age, location, some physical characteristics and distance from your location. The gallery view gives just photos. Clicking on either of these opens up a full and fairly detailed profile. Because you can register for free, expect to find some abandoned profiles. Annoyingly, whilst it's possible to filter out profiles with no photo, you can't filter by last login date, so you may end up with more than a few obsolete profiles when you browse.

You can find profiles using a number of search options. Basic search finds profiles on the basis of age, location, distance and keyword. There's also a username search and an advanced search that extends the range of criteria from the basic search to incorporate more or less all the information listed on a profile, so it's quite detailed. If you're in a hurry you can also try the preconfigured searches (who's online, who's new, featured members, who's on IM, who I viewed/viewed me), which are handy.

In addition to the usual email, you can chat in real time in the chat rooms (though they are almost empty), show interest in other members, as an introduction, or send gifts, which are personalized icons including rubber ducks (10 credits), roses (40 credits) and rings (100 credits). Why you'd waste more money on doing this is anybody's guess. Credit prices are given above.

Free members can create a profile, receive email, show interest and search profiles (limited). Free members also get to show interest and visit the chat rooms. Upgraded members get unlimited messaging, feature above free members in searches and post more photos. For the low fee of joining it's well worth it if you like the site and find potential contacts. Any problems, you can contact the site using the email support form or postal address if you're in no hurry.

GayDating.com is cheap and cheerful, if a little hollow. It has plenty of features and ways of connecting, along with a low membership fee. However, it just lacks that spark and for this reason your money may be better spent elsewhere.
