Our Review:

GayFriendFinder.com is a bright, clearly arranged site that aims to help gay guys find lasting relationships. You'll find plenty of profiles to browse through and a host of features. But how does it compare with the competition?

As with pretty much all gay dating sites making up this category, it's free to register as a member, create your profile and start browsing. All you need is a valid email address. The membership base is dispersed across the globe; at the time of this review there were 170,361 members registered in the US, which isn't all that many. Of these, there were only around 30 online. Most members were located in Europe and Asia. A lot of profiles seemed incomplete, indicating that they may have been abandoned or fakes. When browsing profiles you realize that what's on offer here pales in comparison to sites like GayxxxDates.com or OutPersonals.com. The problem is that whilst there are plenty of features and the site looks good, members don't seem to hang around for long. In addition to full profiles you can browse 'at a glance' profiles that summarize the main characteristics of the members. Note that you can't view profile photos or the full profile unless you upgrade. However, you can upload plenty of photos and create your own photo albums.

You can search profiles in a number of different ways. Basic search allows you to specify what kind of relationship you're looking for, age and location. You can also filter results by removing standard members. This means that you won't get any free members in your return results, lowering the likelihood of getting many fake or abandoned profiles. Free members can also access the username search, as well as preconfigured searches where you click on a tab and generate lists of members online now, new members, members like me, as well as popular members, videos, photos and photo albums.

With reference to connecting with other members, you can exchange email, request IM by clicking on a member profile, and initiate contact by sending icebreakers called 'flirts'. These are similar across most gay dating sites. In addition you can also visit the chat rooms featuring topics of interest (mainly more steamy chat rooms with names such as the 'hot tub', 'leather bar' and 'brawl room'). Otherwise you can select a room based upon your geographic location, though it should be mentioned that these rooms are fairly quiet, if not empty. Furthermore, there are 929 interest groups with 8767 members on the site, covering everything from hobbies, and interests to gay lifestyle issues. Here it's possible to find people with interests akin to your own. Other ways of connecting include sending members your own voice messages or adding them to your hotlist, favorites, or friends list. 

Free members are quite restricted, limited to replying to emails only and sending introductory smiles (3 only). Free members are also limited to basic searches and preview profiles without photos until upgraded. Emails can be stored up to 30 days. Silver members have unrestricted access to communication features, show up before standard members in searches, can keep emails for 60 days, access video intros, blogs, groups and magazine features. Finally, Gold members get to keep messages for 90 days, full access to all videos and photos, blogs, magazine features, extra-large photos and priority 24/7 phone support. Silver and standard members have to rely on the site's help sections and email support. It's not cheap to join, so do yourself a favor by opting for a 12 month membership and paying a reasonably low monthly fee. Joining for 1 or 3 months just isn't worth it, and free membership is too limiting.

GayFriendFinder.com doesn't quite justify the price tag, given the membership base and chances of meeting with other members in person. However, it has plenty of great features and much to recommend it.
