Our Review:

GKiss.com is a great-looking site, glossy and polished. It aims to help gay guys meet, whether it be for friendship, romance or casual encounters. It's free to join and within a couple of minutes you could be browsing profiles of guys like you. All you need is a valid email address.

It's not easy to find exactly how big the membership base is, as the web designers don't consider such information to be so important. They're right in the sense that just because a dating site has a huge number of profiles (this one has thousands), it's going to get you meeting more guys. At the time of this review there were just shy of around a thousand or so members online, which isn't a huge number in comparison to other sites. Many of the profiles you come across seem to have missing photos and the profiles themselves aren't too detailed, indicating that there are a lot of obsolete or fake profiles to wade through. This might be because prospective members are put off by the 24-72 hour wait before a photo is approved when uploaded, which is a little annoying. Until your photo is approved there's not too much you can do. Another annoying point is that, as a standard member you don't get to see a member's last login date, which makes it difficult to know if a profile's still in use.

You'll find a range of search options to help you in your quest, including plenty of preconfigured searches (new members, verified members, Gold members, recommended members and compatible matches to name most of them). There's also a keyword search, zodiac sign search and location search, all of which may be more or less useful depending on what you're interested in. The advanced search has an impressive array of search tools, allowing you to choose from a wide range of criteria. It's also possible to save your searches to refer back to later on. The search tools are a highlight of the site. 

Connecting with others is achieved easily via the profile pages. Email is the default communication medium, though you can also chat in real time by requesting IM chat. In addition, you might flirt with a member by winking at him, or leave a comment on his profile page, or even send a birthday ecard. Creating friends networks and favorites lists are also good ways of connecting with others as other members are informed when you add them to your lists (other members must confirm your request before they are added to your friends list). There are no group chat rooms to speak of. In terms of other features, you'll also find a section on ideas for first dates that you can comment on, blogs, daily gay news, gay forums and dating advice (along with STD support for those who don't read the advice first time round).

With a free membership you can create a profile, upload photos, and send winks to all members. However, if you get email or an IM request you have to upgrade unless it's from a Gold member (which is unlikely). You can also search profiles for free, but you just get the basic search and preconfigured options. With Gold membership you get unlimited messaging and all of the features described above and more, including access to all search tools, track lists, compatible matches, featured member status, and appearing at the top of search results. Basically, to get anything out of the site you'll have to upgrade. Is it worthwhile? Well, you do get reasonable value for money, but the secrecy over members and the relative lack of complete profiles gives slight cause for concern. If in doubt, check out some of the other sites in this category. Finally, technical support is very good, including 24/7 telephone support if a Gold member. The rest have to make do with an ample FAQs section and email.

GKiss.com has plenty of promise but doesn't quite cut the mustard because of the disappointing membership base and profiles. However, it has some great features such as the search tools and other gay community resources. However, you don't really get much  as a free member, which means that if you like it here, you'll have to pay the reasonably moderate fee to upgrade.
