Our Review:

GayDatingDirect has been set up with the aim of helping gay guys find new dates, friends and romantic partners. It doesn't have the same meat market feel as other sites in this category. It looks a little plainer and is clearly ordered, meaning that you're going to find navigation quite simple.

You can register for free and start meeting new people today. All you need is a valid email address. You'll find both males and females on the site, mostly European, so if you live in the States then there might not be so many profiles to choose from, unless you're willing to relocate for love. At the time of this review there were 33,259 members online, which is a fairly high figure for a site outside of the Top 10. Once you're signed up, the navigation bar at the top of the homepage features 5 main tabs that link you to the most useful site pages. 'Home' returns you to the homepage, 'members online' tells you who's currently logged on, 'search' takes you to the search tools page, 'my profile' allows you to adjust your profile settings and 'my account' allows you to manage your subscription.

One of the most useful bits of information on your profile is the 'visits' box at the top left-hand side. By clicking on it you can see who's visited. You get to upload up to 5 portrait photos and 20 to your photo album that showcase your life (there's no nudity). You also find some basic information about a member's age, location, lifestyle, tastes, hobbies and so on, as well as who they're hoping to meet. You can also upload an introductory video or create a quiz as an icebreaker. When browsing other profiles, by hovering over preview profiles (e.g. when looking at search results) you get more information on that person. Just click to open up the full profile.

You can access a number of preconfigured searches to find member profiles (e.g. living close to me, born on the same day as me, my perfect match, I'm their perfect match and more). You also get a quick search (age range and location) and advanced search (age, location, status, physical characteristics, personality, leisure and more). You can also filter out profiles without photos and save searches. Unfortunately it's not possible to filter results by last login date.

You can connect to other members mainly by email and IM. It's a nice feature that you can get video IM so you get to see and chat with other members in real time (if you have a webcam). To introduce yourself you can also wink at members, add members to your favorites list or send a friend request. Free members get to create a profile, use the basic search and view profiles of other members, however, you're restricted to 5 profiles per day and can only wink at members. Subscribers get all of the features mentioned above, plus ad-free browsing and enhanced account settings (e.g. hiding profiles you're not interested in). So confident are they that you'll find love within 12 months, they promise your money back if you don't. Whilst the site is more expensive than others, if you're thinking of joining you get a better monthly rate when joining for a year and can look forward to your money back if you still find yourself lovelorn a year later. The site support is pretty good, with a 24/7 telephone helpline, email support and decent FAQs section.

Whilst GayDatingDirect falls outside of our Top 10, it offers a good, if basic service, with the added guarantee that if you don't find love within a year, you get your money back. So, why not take a look and take the plunge? What do you have to lose?
